When exploring the mysteries of language, how can we dig deeply into the cognitive mechanism hidden in text information? This book provides a unique solution path. The author carefully constructs a cognition-oriented bilingual parallel corpus, which reveals the key to solving this problem. By using the method of contrastive analysis, the book analyzes in detail how three independent Chinese translators deal with the cultural and non-cultural items in Jane Austen's English novel Northanger Abbey, so as to extract the text patterns of translation strategies with statistical significance. Drawing on the neurocognitive theory of bilingual processing, the author interprets these text patterns and shows how to associate translation products with translation behavior and brain activity. thus it provides a new perspective and research method for understanding and speculating the internal mechanism of the brain in the cognitive process of translation. Compared with other methods to study the translation process through lab methods such as eye tracking, keylogging or EEG devices, the corpus-assisted method requires less instruments and experiments and is thus more operable and feasible. As an academic work focusing on using such a method to explore the cognitive process of translation, this book will undoubtedly bring inspiration and insights to translation researchers in general and readers who are interested in using empirical research methods to explore the cognitive process of translation.
